film and television production
Muonio has served as a filming location for a variety of domestic and international productions. The area's diverse and beautiful nature—with its high fells, impressive bodies of water like the Tornio-Muonio River enhanced by wild rapids, large lakes with sandy dunes or islands, idyllic wetlands, and tranquil forests—brings the Arctic landscape close to the viewer in its true form.
One of Muonio’s strengths as a filming location is its interesting architecture, which includes rural-style buildings, modern architecture, and structures that survived the war. The region features several visually striking villages and numerous nationally significant landscapes.
An additional point of interest may be Muonio’s location right near the national border with Sweden—by simply crossing a bridge, one can visit the idyllic village setting of Muodoslompolo.
As a destination, Muonio is peaceful, especially outside the winter season, and for a small municipality, it offers an exceptionally comprehensive range of services, including accommodation. Muonio is easily accessible both internationally and domestically: an airport and a railway station are located less than an hour away. The area also has a well-developed road network, ensuring good access to various filming locations.
Muonio Municipality actively participates in the activities of the Lapland Film Commission, supporting production companies filming in the area—be it films, TV series, or commercials. In collaboration with local businesses, the municipality assists in finding suitable filming locations and services tailored to production needs. A key partner in this endeavor is Metsähallitus, which grants filming permits for the areas it manages. For more information on filming permits, please visit Metsähallitus' website.
The municipality is currently developing its own local production incentive model. Updates and related information will be provided on this page.
